Seeing is Believing: a Century to Remember For Medical Science

It is probably fair to say that medical science is well advanced. From the discovery of penicillin by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming in 1928, the first human to human heart transplant in South Africa, heart surgeon Christiaan Barnard in 1967, the 20th century saw some of the most important medical breakthroughs.

But while we can not deny the universal importance of Fleming and academic progress of Barnard, there were a number of other medical visionaries remarkable that we appreciate to be, some of whom may not get the credit that they deserve.

Number of technological inventions, it is not always easy to give credit to a person because they may have been refined and perfected over a period of time. In fact, there may indeed be a number of people who have helped the technology over several decades of progress.

Laser Eye ChirurgieSo example, has been pioneering over the years. Even before the laser surgery was invented, was the Russian doctor Svyatoslav Fyodorov implementation of innovative work in the field of eye surgery – and in 1960 he implanted the first artificial lens. Dr. Fedorov has also developed a technique of myopia surgery with very precise incisions near the area of the cornea.

In the same year that Fedorov was the first artificial lens implantation, the American physicist Theodore Maiman developed and patented the first laser, there are a number of other pioneers who participated in pioneering research in the field of eye surgery and it was a combination of all their efforts, paving the way for the first laser eye surgery in the 1980s.

The excimer laser – by Nikolai Basov invented in 1970 – was originally used for silicon computer chips. But in the 1980s, the potential use of technology in biological tissues has been achieved, and the American physicist Steven Trokel patented the use of lasers for corrective action, particularly in eye surgery. And in 1987 had laser surgery first on the human eye.

Of course, it would be easy to Trokel all the credit for the invention of laser eye surgery, but it proved to be a massive disservice to all those who contributed before doing so, contribute to the basis for Steven Trokel to ensure that corrective measures eye surgery possible for millions of people worldwide.

There is little doubt that the laser eye surgery has a major influence in the medical world has been and how we came to adopt the use of advanced technologies for many diseases have contributed. In fact, it seems that vision is really to believe how far we have come in recent years.
